What is scabies?
Scabies is an infestation in the outer later of the skin caused by tiny mites called Sarcoptes Scabiei. It occurs when the mites burrow and lay eggs in the skin, and then continue to multiply and spread. On the skin, it looks like a red rash which can appear on nearly any part of the body and can be very itchy. As with any infestation, the scabies mites can quickly multiply and spread throughout the skin and to other people, making it a very contagious issue that many like to deal with as soon as it appears.
With over 300 million people affected by scabies worldwide, the infestation has been spreading fast. However, as with other infestations and viruses that spread like this, with so many man-made treatment being used the scabies mites have begun to adapt and become more resistant. Scientific research from the Menzies School of Medicine in Darwin Australia found this with a number of known treatments and also a emerging resistance to some others. This has lead to a need for more than the typical man-made products which has lead to a rise of natural options being created and used.
Made from the manuka plant, or leptospermum scoparium, manuka oil is made by steam distilling wild harvested manuka leaves. After studying the manuka plants throughout New Zealand, it was found that those native to the remote East Cape in the Northern Island contained the highest levels of antimicrobial triketone compounds making it considered the highest quality and best manuka oil available. Because of this potential antibacterial nature of the East Cape manuka oil, it has been used for centuries by the native Maori people for purposes including:
