What is manuka oil?
Manuka oil is made from the manuka plant, or Leptospermum scoparium, which is native to New Zealand. From scientific study on manuka plants grown around the country, it was found that the highest quality manuka oil could be made from the plants native to the East Cape in the Northern Island. The plants in this remote region are said to contain the highest levels of antimicrobial triketone compounds, making them the best to be made into multi-use manuka oil.
Often compared to a similar essential oil, tea tree, manuka oil was found to be better in terms of their antibacterial properties. Independent In-Vitro studies by the Cawthron Institute in New Zealand concluded that East Cape Manuka Oil was found to be 20 to 30 times more active than Australian Tea tree Oil in controlling gram positive bacteria. This has made manuka oil very popular amongst native Maori tribes who used it for a number of purposes including:
- Bites and stings
- Damaged skin
- Muscle pain
- Body Odour
