Scabies is a highly contagious and common skin infection that causes extreme skin rash and itching. This skin rash is caused by Sarcoptes scabiei, parasite mites that feed on humans to survive. If not quickly treated, these parasites lay small eggs inside the skin, causing the infection to rapidly spread. These mites can lay about 40-50 eggs in their lifetime, which develop into adult mites in just 10-15 days. Scabies can survive for up to 24-36 hours without host contact.
It is believed that approximately 1 in 1000 people are infected with the scabies disease each month. There are usually more outbreaks of scabies in the winter time, when people tend to have more body contact with each other. Thankfully, there are many scabies treatments available which can both kill the parasites and soothe the itching symptoms.
Scabies is transmitted via close physical contact with an infected person. In most cases, scabies is passed between people via skin to skin contact or sexual intercourse. The speed and severity of transmission to the new host depends on the severity of the infected person’s scabies.
Because scabies mites can live for up to 36 hours without host contact, the infection can also be passed on through furniture, clothing, linen and towels that have come into contact with them. In very rare cases, mites can be transmitted through the air, although this is only usually the case with severe cases of Norwegian scabies. The symptoms of this include not only itching of the skin, but also the development of a crusty layer containing thousands of mite larvae. When brushed or broken, the dust from this crust can carry mites and eggs through the air.
The most common symptoms of scabies are intense itching, discomfort and rashes on the skin. Here’s some information about the symptoms of scabies:
Mite Tunnels: Mite tunnels are visible on the skin as fine, dark or silvery lines about 2-10 mm long. They are usually seen on loose skin between the fingers and on the inner surface of the wrists and hands. Scabies can occur anywhere on the skin, but it usually affects the warmest areas.
Itching: Severe itching is one of the most common symptoms of a scabies infection. Often, the hands are affected first, before the itching spreads to other infected areas. Itching is commonly said to be worse at night and in the evenings. Symptoms usually appear 2-6 weeks after you have been infected, and itching may continue for up to 2-4 weeks after the mites are dead.
Skin Rash: This rash often occurs with the itching, and is seen as a blotchy red rash that can affect any area of the body. Most people with scabies will see this rash on the inside of the thighs, abdomen, buttocks and armpits, and in women around the breasts . In men, skin rash can also affect the skin of the genitals. Children and the sick and elderly are more likely to experience the rash around the head and neck. In young children, the rash can be visible on the face, head, neck, scalp, palms and soles. In young infants, scabies can cause small blisters on the feet or hands.
The rash can sometimes be misdiagnosed as a symptom of other skin diseases, so it is important to get it examined properly by a doctor to make sure you have scabies.
Cuts and Sores: Cuts, sores and broken skin can arise due to the intense itching that the scabies rash causes. In some cases, damaged skin becomes infected with bacteria, which further inflames and exacerbates the rash and infection.
Since the scabies infection is highly contagious and unpleasant, it’s always best to try and deal with it and treat it as quickly as possible. If left untreated, scabies can develop into the much more serious condition Norwegian scabies.Scabies can be treated using either prescription drugs or natural products. The most popular scabies treatments include antibiotic creams, ointments and lotions. These can be used to kill bacteria and soothe the itching. .
If you are suffering from scabies, it’s important to have your family or living partners checked and treated too. You should also contact anyone that you’ve had close physical contact with in the previous 2 weeks, as they could also be infected. To reduce the risk of passing mites on to those you live with, change your bedding, towels and clothes regularly at 60 degrees.
